I’m Mike Raggio creator of 550 Survival Art. I started tying rope, line, and knots when I first entered the United States Coast Guard in 1969. Most of my service time was in the United States as well as time isolated duty in Alaska and serving over in the first Gulf War. Much of my time was on small boats doing marine law enforcement and heading up a Port Security Unit in Tacoma WA. I retired with 30 plus years of service in the United States Coast Guard. After 9-11 I was called back to active duty for two more years. During this portion of active duty I was sent to Guam to set up their home land security at the Coast Guard Station. After retiring again, I did contract work over in the UAE. That is where I really got interested in doing fancy knot work. I really like the challenge of doing new projects. Some of my more challenging projects have been making a cheek rest for a rifle stock and the knot work for a sword. There are so many things you can do and make with 550 paracord. I enjoy the work because when new individual request comes in, it’s a challenge to figure out and develop or create the product the customer is wanting.
